A label is a piece of paper, plastic film, cloth, metal, or other material attached to a container or product, bearing written or printed information or symbols about the item.
However, in China, the term "标签" carries another meaning — it refers to stereotyping others. This connotation is negative. "Labeling someone" means categorizing or judging a person based on specific traits or behaviors, thereby imposing a certain impression on them.
While this behavior may seem harmless, it actually has many drawbacks. Stereotypes can cause discrimination and prejudice. When people judge others based on preconceived ideas rather than reality, it leads to unfair treatment and harms their opportunities and growth.
Additionally, stereotypes hinder communication and cooperation. By encouraging bias and misunderstanding, they damage trust and respect, restricting both individual and group advancement. Ultimately, stereotypes reduce opportunities for collective and personal development.
Ultimately, a more mature society is not one without labels, but one that understands the boundaries of labels and always reserves space for the unclassifiable nature of people. In such a society, every label would be seen as a temporary signpost rather than a final verdict, and every soul could break free from the gravity of labels and operate freely in its own orbit.

Taoist teaches that "the name that can be named is not the eternal name," reminding us that labels can never fully capture reality. Confucianism advises against preconceptions, absolutes, stubbornness, and egoism—emphasizing open-mindedness rather than rigid categorization. These philosophies remind us that maintaining intellectual openness requires greater wisdom and courage than rushing to classify and label others.
In this age where labels are everywhere, we must learn to distinguish between two types: embrace those that identify products, but be wary of those that define human nature. Let materials be materials, and humanity be humanity. Only by doing so can we strike a balance between information and understanding—benefiting from the efficiency of categorization without losing our genuine curiosity and respect for others and the world.
