Permanent vs. Removable: A Guide to Choosing the Right Label Adhesive

Have you ever chosen the wrong label glue, causing the surface of your product to be covered with adhesive residue that is difficult to clean, or have labels on important equipment accidentally fallen off?

This article explains in detail the difference between permanent and removable labels, covering the technical principles and selection guide of label adhesive behind it.

By comparing the characteristics and application scenarios of permanent and removable labels, we can help your make more professional decisions in logistics, asset management and product packaging, and avoid production losses caused by sticky errors.

Why Your Label Choices Matter More Than You Think
I believe that when everyone uses labels, many people do not understand their differences. Wrong material selection will bring a lot of trouble to production, packaging, and warehousing operations. For example, when price labels need to be temporarily replaced, extremely sticky permanent labels are misused. It cannot be peeled off without trace during later replacement, which will not only leave a large amount of glue stains but also damage the product surface. In this case, you have to use a special glue removal spray, which is very troublesome. On the contrary, removable labels may be misused in long-term identification scenarios such as equipment identification, product traceability, and fixed assets. This leads to the loss of product information and equipment identification, seriously affecting product quality and daily operation and management efficiency. Therefore, accurately distinguishing the performance differences between the two tags is the key to avoiding usage failures and improving the practicality of the label.

What is Label Adhesive?

First, let’s take a brief look at the “good helpers” we use frequently in our daily life.

Adhesive labels are more than just a simple piece of paper; they consist of a face stock, adhesive, and backing paper.

These three components are layered together like a “sandwich.”

The surface material usually uses paper or film as the raw material, and the back is coated with special pressure-sensitive glue(PSA), and finally it is composed of backing paper.

We don't need to apply glue or dip it in water when using it.

It can be firmly adhered to the surface of various materials by gently pressing it.

It is very convenient and comes in various styles.

So,it is widely used in food, daily chemicals, electronics, logistics, clothing and other industries.

According to the different characteristics of glue and sticking performance, it can be mainly divided into two categories.

There are obvious differences in usage performance and applicable scenarios between permanent labels and removable labels

Permanent VS Removable Self-adhesive Labels

Permanent Self Adhesive Labels

This type uses high-viscosity and powerful pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Its core feature is that it has strong adhesion after being pasted and is not easy to peel off or warp after curing.

It has outstanding stability, good tear-resistance, waterproof, high and low temperature resistance, and will not naturally peel off after long-term use.

If you peel it off forcibly, the label will be damaged and there will be residual glue stains, making it impossible to completely remove it.

It is mainly used in fields such as basic product information identification, anti-counterfeiting traceability, and fixed asset management. Commonly used labels include electronic product parameter labels, daily chemical product authenticity labels, equipment nameplates, fixed asset number labels, food and beverage fixed traceability labels, etc.

This prevents labels from falling off and information being lost, and prevents unauthorized dismantling and modification to ensure the uniqueness and stability of the logo.

Removable Self Adhesive Labels

This special label is also called an environmentally friendly label or an N-time label.

Its biggest feature is that it will not leave any residual glue when it is removed, nor will it damage the surface of the object being attached.

Using a patented glue formula, the adhesive strength can be adjusted according to different needs.

Make sure it's firm when first applied but can be peeled off easily. There is no adhesive residue after peeling off and no damage to the surface of the adhered object.

It is not suitable for long-term or outdoor use.

Its stickiness will decrease significantly after being exposed to sunlight or moisture for a long time, and it can be easily peeled off or fall off on its own.

It can be replaced repeatedly without damaging the appearance of the product and is extremely practical.

Comparison ItemPermanent LabelsRemovable Labels
Core Adhesion FeatureStrong and long-lasting adhesion; hard to peel off once stuck onModerate and gentle adhesion; easy to peel off by hand
Main Advantages
  1. 1. Firmly sticks, not easy to fall off in cold storage or transport

  2. 2. Good water and moisture resistance

  3. 3. Stable performance in long-term low-temperature environment

  1. 1.Peels off cleanly, leaves no glue residue

  2. 2. Will not scratch or damage the packaging surface

  3. 3. Works well for reusable packaging

Main Disadvantages
  1. 1. Hard to remove without leaving sticky residue

  2. 2. Easy to tear the packaging when peeled off

  3. 3. Not fit for reusable containers

  1. 1.Weaker adhesion, easy to fall off in harsh low-temperature or humid conditions

  2. 2. Poor long-term durability

  3. 3. Not suitable for long-term cold storage

Best Applicable Scenarios

1. Long-term stored frozen food

  1. 2. One-time use food packaging

    3. Products needing permanent traceability information

  1. 1.Reusable food containers and packaging

  2. 2. Temporary promotional price labels

  3. 3. Products needing label replacement during circulatio
